Bowel Obstruction

BOWEL OBSTRUCTION

What is Bowel Obstruction?
Bowel Obstruction, also referred to as intestinal obstruction, is a blockage in the small or large intestine that prevents food or liquid from passing through the small or large intestine.

What are the symptoms of bowel obstruction?

  • Nausea and or vomiting
  • Lack of or decreased appetite
  • Severe abdominal cramps or pain
  • Difficulty in passing stools or gas
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Diarrhea

How is bowel obstruction treated?
After a brief history taking of your symptoms, investigations will be done to confirm if you have an obstruction. These tests may include blood tests, x-rays of your abdomen or a contrast study (gastrograffin study or a CT scan) that can help to define the presence and the site/area of the blockage.

The management will then be discussed with you and could include intravenous fluids, medication and bowel rest or surgery to remove the blocked area depending on the cause of your obstruction and the severity of your symptoms.
