Rectal Prolapse

What is rectal prolapse?
Rectal prolapse is a condition in which the rectum (the last part of the large intestine) starts to push through the anus (the opening through which stool passes out of your body).

What are the symptoms of rectal prolapse?

  • About 25 to 50 % of people who present with a rectal prolapse suffer chronic constipation.
  • You might see that you are spontaneously passing mucus or small stool or bright red blood from your back passage.
  • You may feel a bulge at the anus; some people feel like they are sitting on a ball.
  • With a mirror, you might be able to see a pinkish coloured bulge peeking through the anus.

How is rectal prolapse diagnosed?

  • When you see the doctor, you will be asked to describe your symptoms.
  • A complete physical examination and rectal exam will be done.
  • During this examination, you will be asked to squat or strain as though you have a bowel motion to see if you have a rectal prolapse.
  • The doctor may place a gloved finger into the anus to check the health of the anal sphincter and rectum.
  • To investigate the cause of the rectal prolapse, you may be required to have an investigation like a colonoscopy to look for problems in the rectum that could be causing the prolapse.
  • A defaecogram may be requested. This is a test that can help to diagnose a prolapse of the rectum or other pathologies like an internal hernia of the small bowel (enterocele) which can give symptoms that are similar to a rectal prolapse.
  • In preparation for a defaecogram, barium (contrast medium) is introduced into the rectum so that it can be seen when x-rays are taken. If an internal hernia of the small bowel is suspected, then the patient is given 2 glasses of barium to drink. The patient will pass out the contrast on a commode while x-rays are taken. This will show the rectum and anal canal during a bowel movement and any disorders of the rectum or internal hernias.

What is the treatment for rectal prolapse?
Surgery will often be required to fix the rectal prolapse as it will get worse with time if not repaired.
